Altuve's ABS Challenge Turns Ball Four into Strike vs. A's

Jose Altuve's ball four against the Athletics was overturned by the new ABS challenge system, turning it into a strike and ending Houston's rally. The A's won 11-4.

In the third inning of Friday's game, Altuve faced A's pitcher Jeffrey Springs. After a full count, Springs threw a low, inside ball four, but a quick challenge by catcher Shea Langeliers had the call overturned. The new ABS challenge system confirmed the pitch as a strike, ending the Astros' rally and giving the A's a 1-0 lead.

Altuve, a 9‑time All‑Star, has started the 2026 season strong with a 1.071 OPS and two home runs in his first nine games. Despite the setback, the Astros remain competitive, but the Athletics capped the game with an 11‑4 victory.
